"To Sleep, Perchance to Dream..."

Someday it will happen...I will actually get to sleep all night long for more than a couple of nights in a row.

When Collette was born, almost eleven years ago, we were new parents - ready for any night-time wakings. Visions of rocking a snugly, cooing baby back to sleep and blissfully returning to bed to continue our own dreaming. The reality was that Collette loved to sleep. So much so, that she rarely woke during the night. She even slept through her "scheduled" feeding times (it's not easy to wake a sleeping baby - much less keep her awake to finish her feeding). We were finally advised by an old family practitioner to never wake a sleeping baby - she'd wake up when she was hungry. Aaahhhh....a parents dream - a baby who slept through the night and still to this day is a great sleeper.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have little miss Lauren. When Lauren and I were in the hospital after her birth she rarely slept. This pattern did not change once we were home. I became very, very well acquainted with late, late, late night television. Six years later, she still does not sleep through the night with any consistency. Last night at 2:15am the dreaded "mom...Mom...MOm...MOM" so down the hall & into her room I race before she wakes up Collette...

Mom: "What do you need?"
Lauren: "I think I might need some juice"

I return, sippy cup in hand to deliver the much desired beverage. A kiss goodnight and I'm back in bed...of course, now I can't go back to sleep. As I finally doze off, at 3:15..."mom...Mom...MOm...MOM". By now I'm REALLY tired...

Mom: "Please go back to sleep"
Lauren: "I can't"
Mom: "Please, Please go back to sleep, you're going to be tired for school tomorrow"
Lauren: "Okay, I'll go back to sleep"

A kiss goodnight and back to, I still have 90 minutes until it's time to get up!

Yes, someday I will sleep all night...every night. I will know what it feels like to wake up after a full nights sleep, refreshed and ready to face the day. I might even save some money on undereye concealer and Starbucks Peppermint Mochas. Oh well, for now, that's the only dreaming I'll be doing!
