A Letter to my Daughter...

Today is Collette's eleventh Birthday. She is walking around all smiles and happiness - today is HER day. I know of Moms who write their Daughters a letter every year on their Birthday as a keepsake...I thought I'd do mine here.

My Dearest Collette,

Today is your eleventh Birthday. You woke up this morning with a huge smile on your face (as you usually do) ready to start your special day. The first thing you did was sit down at the kitchen table and "craft" yourself a Birthday card - a picture of a Birthday cake with you on the front.

You are such a sweet girl - full of laughter and smiles. You have an inner joy that exudes from your being - you make everyone around you smile. You so do not deserve the hand that fate dealt you - a beautiful growing young lady trapped inside a very young child's mind. You have been through so very much in your short eleven years on this earth - countless medical tests, hours of various therapies each week, being poked and prodded; studied like you are some kind of oddity. You're not, you're just a sweet girl who got a raw deal - it's not fair.

Although school has given up on you, Daddy and I will never give up. We will continue to take you to (and pay for out of our own pocket) all the extra things you need that school isn't giving you. We will always be there for you, no matter what.

You have made such huge gains this year. You've read your first little reading book, you can dress yourself (mostly) and your speech is improving every day.

You like the same things lots of kids like - you love music (especially Elvis). You've decided you want to marry either Elvis or Davy Jones (from the Monkees). The fact that you will probably never get to experience life in the same way I have saddens me..you will never drive a car, or go on a date, or have children, or even just hang out at a friends house and be a kid. We will, however, get to have you with us for the rest of our lives, and this makes us happy because having you around fills our life with joy.

Every night I ask God to make you better. I know this will not really happen, but I can always hope.

Enjoy your eleventh Birthday you sweet little angel. I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you have a super happy day - you deserve it.

Love,
Mommy
xxoo

I write my kids a letter each year and keep it in a safe place. I plan to give them all to them when they turn 18. :-)
