Filters and Vents and Coils....Oh, My!

As seen on Posh Mama Wednesday, February 27, 2008.

...Jeopardy music playing in the background...

Pink Lemonade Liz: "Alex, I'll take Home Maintenance for $2,000"

Alex: "Hairdryer... Heater... Clothes Dryer... Air Purifier..."

Ding, Ding, Ding (sound of jeopardy buzzer)

Pink Lemonade Liz: " What are things with filters?, Alex"

Alex: "That's Correct! You're today's Home Maintenance winner!!"

...Jeopardy music fades out...

That's right! Today, we're talking filters, vents and coils. Very important - yet very often overlooked and taken for granted. Think about it... Every morning you dry your hair - you rely on that small handheld appliance to essentially set the tone for the rest of your day (everyone knows - a bad hair day is just a plain old bad day all around - isn't it?). A little TLC pointed in the direction of that hairdryer will ensure many more good hair days to come. Get out an old toothbrush and clean out the vent holes - your hairdryer will not only be able to breathe, but it will work better too!

Our Heaters keep us warm all winter long. But when was the last time you changed the filter in your furnace? It's usually a pretty simple process that should be done every month. Put a pretty sticker on your calendar, or enter it into your blackberry to remind you to change those filters... After the heater is done being used for the season, put in a new filter so it will be ready to go when the air starts to get chilly in the Fall.

Do you clean out the lint filter on you dryer after every load of laundry? If you do - great job!... If not, you're not only making your dryer work way harder than it has to, but you're putting your home and family at risk from a dryer vent fire. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that in 1998 (the most recent data available), clothes dryers were associated with 15,600 fires, which resulted in 20 deaths and 370 injuries. Fires can occur when lint builds up in the dryer or in the exhaust duct. Lint can block the flow of air, cause excessive heat build-up, and result in a fire in some dryers. Keep your family safe and clean that vent after every load - it really only takes a couple of seconds!

Air purifiers are "the" thing to have lately, and can be very helpful, especially if you have allergies or asthma. Be sure your machine isn't putting all that bad stuff back into the air - clean your filter as recommended by the manufacturer.

As far as coils go... Do you remember to vacuum the coils of your refrigerator on a regular basis? I have to admit that even this one gets me most of the time. Your refrigerator is a big investment and I'm sure everyone would like it to last as long as possible. Vacuuming the coils on a regular basis will, indeed keep it running longer and save power too!

So, sometimes Home Maintenance is a big job (a new roof or plumbing) best handled by the professionals. But more often than not, it's the little, simple things that just take a few minutes to keep everything in good working order. Keep those filters, vents and coils clean and you will be able to live in harmony with your appliances.

Helpful Hint: Don't forget to change those vacuum cleaner bags or empty the debris canister - you'll get lots suction from a vacuum that has an empty receptacle to put the gunk!

Great reminder for those of us who might be concentrating on Spring Cleaning in the near future. I'm actually doing my Spring Cleaning now so that I don't have to move as much. :)
