The Little Red Truck

Last week Lauren was fortunate enough to be part of something really fantastic... The Missoula Children's Theater (MCT) production of "The Little Mermaid". If you've never heard of MCT before, don't feel bad, neither had I, but it's definitely an experience that will not soon be forgotten. It works like this:

On Monday, two tour directors/actors come to the school and any child that wants participate, auditions after school (there were about 100 children this week who tried out). Within a two hour period, about 50 cast members were chosen. Rehearsals started that evening and continued daily throughout the week. The kids worked hard to learn the 50-page script packed with lines, songs, dances, and scene changes. This all culminated in two full-length musical productions (one Friday evening and one Saturday afternoon).

Lauren was cast as a little sea horse (or "sea pony" as they were known in the play) and was absolutely adorable! Her days were very long (most days, she would arrive at school at 8:00am, attend school and then rehearsal so she didn't get home until 5:30). Friday was a 12 hour school day for Lauren (8am - 8pm), but other than being exhausted, she didn't mind a bit. Lauren loved every second of her time as an actress (except the purple makeup "cheeks" she had to wear). The production was top-notch and although I watched the entire play about six times (including rehearsals) - I still loved every minute of it! If your school ever has a chance to bring MCT to do a play at your facility - TAKE IT!!

The film production company Tree + Sky Media has just produced an award winning documentary following six different communities and their week long experience with their MCT production - you can learn more about it at The Little Red Truck.

Here's a sneak peek of the film:

I am so glad to see these comments and thanks so much for posting the trailer! I'm the producer of the film, The Little Red Truck, and wanted to let you know that it will play in San Francisco (not too far away from Napa?) starting Sept 26, 2008 at the Sundance Kabuki at Post & Fillmore. I think you'll find that the film really tells the story of the wonderful work Missoula Children's Theatre does with kids as you have discovered through your own daughter's experience. You might be interested to know that The Little Mermaid is one of the MCT shows we followed in the film.
