10 Tips to Help You Save on Gas

Stumble Upon Toolbar

The price of oil is skyrocketing... and, as we've all seen in the past few months, gasoline costs are at record highs (I paid $4.56 per gallon here in the Napa Valley the other day!). Everyone is looking for ways to save on gas - yes, it's true, one of the easiest ways would be to buy a hybrid car, but not everyone can just pop out and make such a big purchase. No, the answer seems to be to find ways to save gas with the vehicles we're driving now. Here are a few tips to help ease the crunch on your wallet come fill-up time...

Drive a little slower... Did you know that for every mile over 55 mph, your fuel economy drops by 1%? So... let's do the math - driving 65 - 70 mph (average here in California) drops your fuel efficiency by 10-15% - that's a big number!... so just slow it down a little.

Avoid warming up the engine for prolonged periods of time, 30 - 45 seconds is more than sufficient, even on cold mornings.

Use that cruise control... Maintaining consistent speeds improves fuel economy

Wash and Wax your car... Less drag, more aerodynamic - could add up to 7% fuel efficiency. It also stands to reason that you should nix the ski rack or luggage rack if it's removable.

Follow the scheduled maintenance plan... keeping your car running in top condition will help keep it fuel efficient.

Roll up your windows... Open windows create drag, which, at highway speeds, can zap up to 10% off your fuel efficiency.

Remove excess weight from the trunk... Carrying around unnecessary items only makes your car use more fuel.. (I've even read articles that suggest we lose weight to save gas!!)

Make sure your tires are properly inflated.

Accelerate slowly when you are completely stopped.

Park in the shade when possible... some gas will actually evaporate out of the tank if you leave your call in the full, hot sun for long periods of time.

No, you don't have to drive a Prius (although, I love mine!) to have a more fuel efficient car. Just implement a few of these tips and you'll be filling up a little less often!

Great list! I've just spent the last two days at home trying to save a little gas. Makes me a little crazy. But I guess it makes going out a little more exciting!

Great post, I knew about some of the things you wrote about but the one about driving with open windows I do that a lot of the time, will have to change that! I am lucky though I have just retired and I don't have to drive a whole lot anymore, I live within walking distance of everything I need so I could drive even less!

most of the cars use fuel here. Unless those cabs that use gas. Its hard to buy gas as only limited station have them.

This list is short, simple and easy to remember.

I had no idea, though, that parking in the shade could save gas. I then wonder, if driving at night or in the winter has the same effect?
