It's Not Just Canned Meat... It's SPAM..

Stumble Upon Toolbar

With food prices on the rise, an unlikely food product is regaining popularity. Yes, that pork product in the little blue can that used to be a source of jokes, has become an increasing staple on american dinner tables when other forms of meat have become too expensive.

Hormel Foods Corp. said earnings rose 14 percent to $77.6 million, or 56 cents per share. The company cited strong national promotional support for higher sales of SPAM, the company's canned meat. The makers of SPAM, Minnesota based Hormel saw its profits rise 14 percent in the most recent quarter. The company says it's getting many new SPAM customers. SPAM, was created in 1937 and gained fame as the meat that fed Allied troops during World War II.

Hawaii is the worlds largest consumer of SPAM - Hawaiian's eat an average of four cans of SPAM per person per year, more than in any other place on Earth! While our tropical friends have been continuously ejoying the contents of the little blue can, the rest of the world is re-introducing it to their meals and some are trying it for the very first time.

After hearing all this great news.... we can eat meat and still afford it... SPAM stays tasty fresh on the shelf for up to two years... are you putting SPAM on your grocery list this week? Just in case you are, here are a few sites where you can find, not only yummy recipes but some silly trivia (and maybe even a SPAM t-shirt too!) Ha! One year I won 1st prize in a SPAM cooking contest. I needed the money and figured NO one would enter a SPAM cooking contest. Think again. Not only were there hundreds of entrants, but the news crews were there. SPAM is bigger than you think.
