Weight Loss Wednesday - I’ve got the blues

Welcome to Pink Lemonade's Weight Loss Wednesday!

Today, we’re going to sing the praises of the blues. No, not the music (although, that is wonderful).. We’re going to talk about how great blue foods are for your body, and how they can help you lose weight and get healthy.

You see, blue (and purple) foods such as… purple plums, grapes, blueberries, eggplant, figs, purple potatoes, purple asparagus, blackberries and raisin are all loaded with phytochemicals which can benefit your body in so many ways. Blue and purple foods contain several phytonutrients from the flavanoid group – these nutrients help your body in so many ways – scientist are still finding new ways these powerful foods can help your body.

Sure, they’re healthy, you think.. “But how exactly can they help me?” Well, let’s take a look at how many of these foods can help you to get healthy and stay that way…

Maintain a healthy blood pressure – blue & purple foods help maintain healthy blood vessels, which, in turn, allows for better blood flow, thus lowering your chance for a heart attack or stroke.

They help to raise your HDL cholesterol – which will help lower your risk for heart disease.

They’re low in calories – Fruits average about 60 calories for a serving and Veggies, just 25! Any way you look at it, replacing something higher in calories with blue and purple fruits and veggies makes sense when trying to lower your weight.

They help keep your blood slippery – thus helping to prevent your blood cells from sticking together and forming clots – never a good thing – these can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

They lower the risk of Urinary Tract Infections – like cranberries, they help keep the bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls and multiplying.

They have anti-inflammatory properties – which can help with not only conditions such as arthritis and asthma, but lately inflammation has been shown to be detrimental to the cardiovascular system as well.

The phytochemicals in blue and purple foods have also shown to have powerful anti-cancer properties - that can , not only prevent cancer cells from spreading by cutting off their supply of nutrients, but in some cases, completely prevent some types of cancer.

Do you need any more convincing to head out to the store and grab lots of those blue and purple foods? Adding as little as just one serving of blueberries per day can make a huge difference in your health – and let’s face it… the main goal of weight loss shouldn’t be fitting into a size “0” jeans, but getting your body as healthy as it possibly can be. Twenty, thirty or forty years from now, no one will remember what size clothes you wore – but your kids will be able to remember YOU and not have to remember someone who died prematurely because they weren’t healthy.

I just started working out on a regular basis and I've been looking for info. on foods that are healthy etc. I am glad I ran across this article. I would have never known any of this about blue and purple foods. My dad and sister also have high blood pressure problems, so I'll be sure to pass this info. on. Thanks!
