Shmoop Will Help You Pass (Giveaway)
Finals are just around the corner - along with various book reports and projects that your kids have been putting off for weeks now. Do they need a little extra help with Literature, History or Poetry?Point them toward Shmoop! Shmoop is the place to help them figure out what to write about, or Make studying less of a snooze-fest it will even help them Blow their teacher's mind with video, audio, photos, and web links on the topics they're studying.
The hot topics in Shmoop's Literature section today are Beowulf, Hamlet, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Giver. Two of my all-time favorites from this list that I fondly remember studying in High School were Hamlet and To Kill a Mockingbird - classics that will always be a integral part of literature. But I do remember struggling with the themes behind the themes and deeper meanings - Shmoop helps you dig deeper without the struggle.
Shmoop's History section can help you with topics like Who won and who lost the Civil war and why it still matters. You can learn more about Roosevelt's "New Deal", the Great Depression and World War II.
Shmoop's Poetry guides will help "Demystify great poems with our deep and plain-spoken analysis and interpretation".
There's even a Book Club where right now, the topic is the immensely popular "Twilight" series - even I can get into that one!
Shmoop is not a shortcut and wholeheartedly discourages plagiarism - so you can be sure your kids will get the help they need, not just something to copy. FYI: Did you know that, as a teacher's wife I am constantly hearing of really bright kids who rampantly plagiarize - don't they realize it takes about two minutes on google for Teachers to know if it's original or not? Make sure your kids know not to take the chance, send them to Shmoop to get the insight they need to write a paper that they'll be proud of doing on their own.
The great folks at Shmoop are going to give one lucky reader a 2-disc DVD of the hit movie Twilight and popcorn to one very lucky winner.
There are several ways to enter - here are the rules:
* Pop on over to Shmoop and take a look at how these they can help your kiddos write papers that truly show how smart they are. Then come back and leave us a comment telling us your favorite part of Shmoop.
* Become a follower on Twitter. Leave me a comment to let me know your twitter name (if you are already a follower, leave me a comment with your twitter name).

I think its great that they have a section on plagirism. I think its great to offer advice on subjects to write out, but that they take a stance on outright copying from their website.

I like that the website is set up to provide important facts and is not set up as a ready-made report. Students can actually use their own minds!
April 13, 2009 at 9:38 AM
I like the ability to ask for opinions from others on a book. If they get a variety of answers, that helps learning.

I like the fact that they consider the technological age our kids are growing up in, and how easily they can get bored because of the instant gratification of electronica: "Our mission: To make learning and writing more fun and relevant for students in the digital age."

as a teacher, i cheated and went to the teacher section. I loved the idea that you could assign a Shmoop reading to your class. On your classroom blog, have students post a link to passages, photos, or videos they found on Shmoop, along with their personal reaction.
Kids are very computer savy and i think that this would keep them more engaged in the lesson therefore remembering more about what they learned.
