What Did You Do This Summer...? These 5 Kids Decide to Change the World!

Their message, "Heroes come in all shapes and sizes" and these five children are certainly examples of those who believe that anyone has the power to make a positive difference in this world. Beginning this September (Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) and armed with determination, a first-hand knowledge of what it means to go through cancer and inspired by childlike faith that their efforts can and will make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer, these five kids set their course to help expand the research and bring awareness to the issue of Childhood Cancer and to help thousands of children and families along the way.

The children will be traveling the country (in between homework assignments and tests, of course) speaking to various organizations, celebrities and executives through their 20 minute presentation and speech to raise funds for childhood cancer and to create programs with those they speak to support children and families battling this disease. Four of the children are cancer survivors and help serve as advocates to the thousands of other children who are the littlest and bravest among us still fighting their own battle. Their heartwarming stories and innocent determination to make a tremendous impact seems to inspire all who hear them that they too, can make a difference in this world. Dalton Sherman, who was thrust into the national spotlight due to his "Do You Believe In Me" speech in 2008 which you may currently view on YouTube and who has opened for poet Maya Angelou, appeared on Ellen, The Today Show, shared the stage with Donald Trump and whom Oprah welcomed and named as one of the world's smartest and most talented kids is also a member of the group representing those children who are lucky to have their health, but who recognize the importance in making a difference in what currently is the #1 disease killing children.

Funds raised will support the programs of Angel 34, a leading national non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer and who served as a support system to four of the children during their own battles with the disease. Angel 34 was originally founded by Nicole Sheriff who at the age of 13 found herself fighting her own battle against cancer. Having witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of childhood cancer on families, the financial burden that cancer carries with it and the hopelessness that can come with the disease, Nicole was moved with the desire to start a foundation in 2003 at the age of 14. Out of compassion for every child she came across, she vowed that she could make a difference in that child's life. It was her wish that every child have their own angel during their time of need.

Since her passing at the age of 15, Nicole's parents have continued her legacy. "I see what Nicole was able to create at the age of 14 and what the organization has grown to today. As children growing up we've been told that dreams are possible and that we can do anything we set our minds to. Here is our chance to prove it to ourselves," says Matt Carey, one of the participating kids. Angel 34 is committed to bringing hope and healing to the children and families of those affected by childhood cancer and to date has distributed millions of dollars to the cause with the proud distinction that 100% of funds raised goes to support children with cancer. Visit http://www.angel34.org/ for more info.

Funds raised from their efforts will go to support various Angel 34 programs such as:

Complimentary ICEE machine service to children battling cancer in numerous children's hospitals nationwide - ICEE drinks seem to be one of only a very few things children can keep down while going through chemotherapy

Pet therapy programs

Financial assistance to children and families

Free programs, activities and overnight stays for kids battling cancer and their families at the Angel Field B&B and Retreat Center

Medical scholarships

Awareness and Education

Research

National and community advocacy programs

The message they deliver.... Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They are in our communities, on our streets, in our companies, our offices and in our schools. They may be sung or unsung. They are children that save their allowance to give to those in need. They are volunteers that give of themselves when tragedy strikes, they are in the lives of those who reach down to bring another up. They are in anyone who sees a need and extends their heart. These five kids have chosen to make a difference in childhood cancer. How will you make a difference?

Dalton Ridge Sherman a twelve year old 7th grader in the Dallas Independent School District was thrust into the national spotlight after his 2008 "Do You Believe in Me" speech given to over 20,000 teachers and district employees about the importance of educators believing in their students. As a result, millions viewed his inspiring presentation on YouTube and he was asked to appear on Oprah, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show and open for Dr. Maya Angelou. Since those appearances, this young yet inspiring young leader has shared the stage with speakers such as: Stedman Graham, Sec. of Education, Arnie Duncan and Donald Trump, with audiences ranging from 50-28,000.

Dalton is on the "A" Honor Roll and aspires to be a television anchor and after that, maybe President. He enjoys playing sports (especially basketball) and is a blue belt in karate. He's also a member of the Future Leaders Program. Dalton desires to participate in Angel 34's Kids Helping Kids Campaign representing those children who are lucky to have their health, but who recognize the importance in making a difference in what currently is the #1 disease killing children.

Matt is a warrior both on and off the court. A 17 year old junior in high school, Matt has served as starting point guard for his Varsity basketball team since his freshman year. His athletic prowess, his friendly personality and cutting sense of humor make him a natural leader. During the summer of 2009 at the end of Matt's sophomore year he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The same focus and determination he used to lead his team on the court, he now used to fight his own battle for survival. He never doubted he could beat cancer. Now classified as a cancer survivor, he hopes to help generate funds and support to help others win their fight against childhood cancer...and while he's at it, play basketball at the college level and eventually become an airline pilot.

Hello my name is Samantha, Sammi for short, and I am a cancer survivor. I am 5 now, but at just 29 months old I was told that I had leukemia. 859 days and 2,517 pills later my body has beaten this awful disease that tried to rob me of my childhood. I love to ride my bike and play at the playground. Cancer did not slow me down. Yes I may have lost all my hair, but it's back now and curlier and cuter than ever. When I go to clinic I like to help some of the younger kids that are scared of the needles by showing them they don't hurt by letting the nurses poke me and I never cry. It's sad that every time I go to clinic I see a new face, that means that another family has to go through what ours did, and now they have to learn about the world of cancer. I wish the doctors could find a way to prevent kids from ever getting cancer.

Breanna is 17 years old and is a senior in high school this year. She's a fun loving typical teenage girl who likes to go to the movies, shopping and hanging out with friends and family, and just being a socialite. In November of 2008 just before Thanksgiving vacation her life changed tremendously from being a normal teenager, living her life like any other. After a CT scan she and her family were informed there was a mass on her brain that was becoming cancerous. On December 2nd of 2008 she had major brain surgery, followed by radiation and chemo. She realized she couldn't let this bring her down, even though she still had moments of depression, she still tried to keep her head up. During her higher dosages it started to effect her legs and she had to use a walker for the longest time. After she finished treatments she had to begin physical therapy, "I was like a baby again learning how to walk and do everything else. I had to regain my strength. I'm doing good now, walking on my own again and even learned how to run again. My hair is coming in very slow because of the radiation I had to my head," she says.

"I have learned a lot from going through this. I don't take life for granted because you never know what's going to happen tomorrow. My number one quote is everything happens for a reason. So I try and learn from those reasons in order to make me a stronger person, grow into a better person and to show others that anything is possible."

Hi my name is Cheryl, I am seven years old and my little sister is a cancer survivor. Back when my sister was only 2 years old my parents told me that she had something called leukemia. They told me that she would be sick and not feeling like herself for some time and that she might even lose her hair. So I decided that I would grow my hair longer and in November of 2007 I cut it off and donated 12 inches of my hair to make a wig for my little sister for when all of her hair fell out. My sister and I are best friends, we do everything together, I helped her out on days when she didn't feel great and laid around with her on other days when it was too hard for her to get up and move.

A few months ago we have a big party for her to mark her end of treatment. My parents also gave me, "The Coolest Big Sister Trophy," it was as tall as me. My little sister is finally done with all of the chemotherapy, she's back to feeling like herself again, and has the prettiest hair now. She still has to go to visit her doctor once a month to make sure the cancer doesn't come back, but the visit doesn't take that long and she no longer has to stay in the hospital overnight so that makes us happy. I'm very happy and proud that my little sister is a cancer survivor and I want to do all I can to help other kids who have cancer too!

Five time-saving tips for simplifying your back-to-school routine

Five time-saving tips for simplifying your back-to-school routine

As summer winds down, it means fewer backyard barbecues, shorter days, and most of all, kids headed back to school. The transition from summer to school can be daunting for any parent and each year it seems the to-do list gets longer.

Lisa Gurry, one of Working Mother Magazine's 2009 Moms of the Year, has some ideas with the help of Bing.com that can make it a bit more manageable this fall. Her tips are:

Back-to-school shopping: Every school requires certain school supplies and most kids love the process of choosing the perfect new backpack or lunchbox. Some online sites, like Bing.com, offer comparison shopping tools that make it easy for you to find everything you need at a great price and get it shipped to your house, beating the crowds.

*  Pantry stock-up: Before the school year gets underway be sure to stock up on all of the essential pantry staples (snacks, desserts, PB&J, etc) so you will be prepared to pack a great lunch at a moment's notice. Having well-stocked cupboards will help streamline your morning routine and by planning ahead you will be able to get the best prices on all your goods.

*  Centralize the essentials: Don't let things get lost in the shuffle. Turn your home's coat closet or mud room into a school prep station so everyone knows where to find lunch boxes, backpacks, coats, etc, so when the morning rush to eat, dress and brush teeth has the household frenzied you can still make it out the door on time with everything you need for the day in hand. Check out www.bing.com/images to view some great design ideas.

*  Avoid the jam: If you run late, your kids run late. Before you leave to take your child to school or to after school activities like sports, music or dance classes, use mapping and traffic applications to find the best route to avoid traffic, so your kids aren't stressing out about missing anything important from the things they enjoy.

*  The back-up plan: Even the most prepared parent hits a snag once in a while. Realizing half-way to school the lunch box is on the kitchen counter or the gym shoes are at a friend's house can ruin a child's day. A handy mobile application for making mid-route stops is www.bing.com/maps. This application allows you to use your phone to easily find the closest grocery or discount chain to pick up what you need in a hurry and keep you from missing your 9 a.m. meeting at work.

Beet - Tips, Tricks and a Recipe

Beet - Tips, Tricks and a Recipe

Today's focus is on BEETS

Now, now! Don't turn your nose up! There's way more to beets that the purple gushy sliced things you see decorating salad bars all of over America. We're talking fresh beets, the kind that are in season RIGHT now!

Beets are amazingly healthy; they tell you that all by themselves by their gorgeous color. Rich in folate, fiber, vitamin C, magnesium and a whole host of other vital nutrients, beets need to considered in your diet. Seriously!

Here's today's TRICK:

Raw beets are easy to disguise in a beef and black bean burrito. Ask me how I know. :-) My children (now 20 & 18) still don't know to this day they have consumed many a beet this way!

Here's a TIP:

Store unwashed beets in your fridge's crisper. They'll stay good for 2 or more weeks! If the beets "bleed" on you, use lemon juice to help remove the purple.

And your RECIPE:

Roasted Beets

4 to 6 beets, scrubbed, peeled and quartered (they'll bleed)

1-2 tablespoons olive oil

sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place your cut up beets evenly on a baking pan; drizzle with olive oil, top with salt and pepper to taste. Roast till fork tender, about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size.

Keeping Produce Fresh

Keeping Produce Fresh

One place you can really get nailed on is buying fresh produce. Produce will only keep so long so you absolutely have to have a plan to use it up. If all you do is buy it and let it sit in your fridge, you might as well start flushing five-dollar bills down the toilet!

But still the question remains, how do you keep your produce fresh? That's a great question and for sure, the answer varies according to what you have. Let's tackle the most common fruits and veggies, shall we?

First up, some things you need to know. There is a certain chemical compound called ethylene that is released as produce ripens. This ripening action builds up in a closed plastic bag so the gas makes your food break down quicker. What I do is keep the bags open to avoid that too quick ripening factor. If you take it out of the bags, it will dry out so opening the bag really helps to preserve it. Check too with the packaging you bought your produce in. Often times, these bags have little holes in them to allow the ethylene to release without drying out.

Secondly, there are things that should refrigerated and there are others that should not. Here is a list of stuff to store in your pantry--

  • Onions
  • Potatoes
  • Garlic
  • Shallots
  • Hard winter squashes
  • Sweet potatoes

Keeping these guys away from the light will help prolong their shelf life and stop your potatoes and onions from sprouting.

Here is a list of stuff to stick in the fridge--

  • Apples
  • Cherries
  • Grapes
  • Melons (unless you're trying to ripen up on the countertop)
  • Corn
  • Berries (don't wash till ready to use)
  • Grapes
  • Peas
  • Any citrus
  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus (cut the ends off and place them in a glass of water, plastic over the top)
  • Lettuces
  • Spinach
  • Eggplant
  • Cucumbers
  • Mushrooms
  • Peppers
  • Leeks
  • Greens
  • Cauliflower & Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Any fresh herbs
  • Radishes
  • Green onions or Scallions
  • Zucchini & Summer squash
  • Turnips
  • Green beans
  • Celery

The thinner the skin on the fruit or vegetable, the sooner it needs to be used.

Here is a list of stuff that can start on your counter then can go into the fridge if necessary, but you need to be aware that it can get too cold and end up somewhat bruised or ruined by the fridge--

  • Avocados
  • Bananas
  • Tomatoes
  • Peaches
  • Papaya
  • Apricots
  • Plums
  • Pineapple
  • Pears
  • Nectarines
  • Mangos
  • Kiwi

There you go...everything you wanted to know about keeping produce but were afraid to ask! This simple guide should help you start storing and using your produce wisely without the spoilage. Enjoy!

Eat, Pray and LOVE your Relationship!

Eat, Pray and LOVE your Relationship!

With Eat Pray Love hitting theaters, I suspect there's a lot of soul-searching going on. The movie is based on the book of the same name which focuses on the author Elizabeth Gilbert's round-the-world journey to seek out enlightenment and peace after her divorce. It's reported that her publisher paid her an advance which helped to finance the trip and there's no doubt that would sweeten the pot and help make such a trip doable. Most of us probably won't see an advance that enables a trip like that but there are plenty of things you can do to ensure enlightenment and peace without leaving home.

And since my area of expertise is relationships, here are a few tips to keep things happy on the home front - and to help ensure the only round-the-world excursion you'll take is one for fun and relaxation, with your significant other by your side!

Don't over-ride emotion. Sure, it can seem easier to just sweep heated discussions or uncomfortable communications under the rug but sooner or later things will resurface. Opting not to talk about things will likely lead down a road you don't want to be on; one where you end up in a knock down drag out fight, or one where you're pushed apart and possibly even enter into an affair.

Instead, learn to fight fair. The idea is to provide a safe place where each person can feel comfortable talking about their fears and frustrations. These types of habits can be the glue that helps to create passion in a relationship, even during and spite of disagreements and conflict.

Know your "Imago." Imago is the imprint that makes you who you are - your background, upbringing, friends, job history, education and so forth. But it's also the "image" of what your'e looking for in a partner. As you transition through life changes with your significant other, a big part of making that transition successfully comes from the way you deal with stressors as a couple. Being aware of how YOU deal with these things (your imago) and acknowledging your partner's imago helps to forestall any preconceived notions or assumptions. It all comes back to being honest with yourself and your partner!

Have an affair - with your own partner! People are looking for novelty, for that dopamine high we get when we try something new and adventurous. Unfortunately, many people sacrifice a relationship they've worked hard to build on the quest for that high. There are ways to recreate these feelings with your partner, eliminating the need to look outside your relationship. You know those feelings you had when you first met? That's the newness and excitement you're looking for. Bring new elements into your relationship, and help yourself fall back in love with your partner.

These are just a few creative and basic ways to encourage healthy relationships. For more, check out Make Up Don't Break Up, Adultery the Forgivable Sin, and Financial Infidelity.

Tears, healing, and a message of hope

Tears, healing, and a message of hope

Yesterday was a challenge in many ways. I spent most of the day crying my way through appointments, crying before and after my radio show, and crying while sitting in the parking lot. When I was done, I cried some more. The point of all this crying was that I was following a cue from a dream I'd had the night before. When I woke up yesterday, the dream was still so vivid and heavy in my mind that I knew there was a message there. I spent about half an hour in an attempt at analysis, and then finally I just gave up and let myself become a part of the cloud of darkness that was hanging over me. Thus began the crying.

These things never come at a convenient time, like when I have a day to myself or when I'm alone somewhere. I resented having to cry myself through a full schedule of appointments, but I trust my practice enough to know that when the time comes and the emotions present themselves, the best think to do is to work through them right then and there, rather than to try to hold it in for a "better" time.

As I got toward the end of my crying, I realized what the message of the dream had been: "you're sad, and you need to cry about that." And that was it, it was really that simple. I had some grief I'd been holding in, some from a while ago and some recent, and it simply refused to be ignored any longer. The great thing about the current me (versus the me of ten years ago) is that I no longer feel anxious, ashamed, or apologetic about expressing my emotions whenever and wherever I need to. I didn't over-explain myself to the people who witnessed my crying (and there were a lot of them); I just said whatever I needed to say to be true to myself, and left it at that. As a result, I got truth back tenfold, in the form of Kleenex and lots of great hugs.

In the evening when I checked my email, a friend had sent me this Hopi prayer. Isn't it amazing how the Divine notices when you have an empty space where grief used to be, and fills it up with gifts instead? I thought I would share this gift with you, in case you need it for support, for hope, for encouragement, or just as permission to cry. Enjoy!

HOPI MESSAGE

“You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour

Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour.

And there are things to be considered:

Where are you living?

What are you doing?

What are your relationships? Are you in right relationship?

Where is your water? Know your garden.

It is a time to speak your Truth.

Create your community. Be good to each other.

And do not look outside yourself for the leader.

This could be a good time!

There is a river flowing now very fast.

It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.

They will try to hold on to the shore.

They will feel they are being torn apart, and they will suffer greatly.

Know the river has its destination.

The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river

See who is in there with you

And celebrate.

At this time in history we are to take nothing personally.

Least of all ourselves.

For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves!

Banish the word “struggle” from your attitude and your vocabulary.

All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.

We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Borgata’s Bobby Flay Shares 9 Grilling Tips & Recipe for Labor Day

Borgata’s Bobby Flay Shares 9 Grilling Tips & Recipe for Labor Day

Looking for any last-minute Labor Day grilling tips?

TV personality Bobby Flay who opened his first steakhouse, Bobby Flay Steak, at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, is eager to share his tips on how to become a grilling pro just in time for Labor Day.

Borgata’s Bobby Flay shares his nine best tips, tricks and techniques, in addition to his delicious Ribeye & Anaheim Chile Quesadilla that will wow guests at any backyard bbq.

1. DON’T BE INTIMIDATED BY THE GRILL

§    A grill is just a source of heat. Just like a stove, it is very user-friendly.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT GRILL FOR YOU

§    Charcoal or gas. Both give excellent results, so choose the one that best suits your style of cooking.

3. GIVE YOURSELF ROOM

§    Don’t underestimate the importance of having enough room to work. Grilling is much more relaxing when you are not trying to juggle a whole collection of plates and bowls as you do it. If your grill doesn’t have enough workspace – and they almost never do – set up a table right next to your grill.

4. ORGANIZE & PRIORITIZE

§    Organize your tasks: plan a menu, make lists, do the shopping. When it’s time to hit the grill, get everything out in front of you: food, spices and tools. Everything you are going to need should be within easy reach.

5. MAKE SURE IT’S HOT

§    Most of the time, I grill over high heat. I like things to move fast. I like the sound and smell of a very hot fire. I gravitate towards dishes that you can get on and off the grill as quickly as possible. After a while, you’ll know without thinking about it how hot the fire is – high, medium-high, etc. Until then, you can use the time-tested method of holding your hand 4 inches above the grate and seeing how long you can keep it there. It may sound a little dangerous, but you’ll pull your hand back at just the right moment.

◦ High: 2 counts

◦ Medium-high: 4 counts

◦ Medium: 6 counts

◦ Medium-low: 8 counts

◦ Low: 10 counts

6. KEEP THE LID CLOSED WHEN COOKING ITEMS THAT TAKE LONGER THAN 10 MINUTES

§    Items like ribs, whole chicken, bone-in chicken breasts, etc.

7. DON’T PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD

§    The more you touch the food on the grill, the more it will stick and begin to fall apart. Brush your burgers, fish, vegetables with oil and season with salt and pepper and place on a hot grill. Don’t touch it for at least 2 minutes! It needs to form a crust so that it can naturally pull away from the grill. If you begin to turn it before the crust has formed, it will stick.

8. DON’T FLATTEN BURGERS, STEAKS & CHOPS WITH THE SPATULA

§    It will only press out flavorful juices and cause flare-ups. Flip the food only once if possible.

9. GRILLING MEAT: WHEN IN DOUBT, IT’S BETTER TO UNDERCOOK THAN OVERCOOK

§    You can always put food back on the fire if you need to.

RIBEYE & ANAHEIM CHILE QUESADILLA
Serves: 4

Marinated Ribeye

Ingredients:

8 Cloves Garlic, finely chopped

2 Anaheim Chiles, stems removed and coarsely chopped

3 Tablespoons Oregano, finely chopped

½ Cup Canola Oil

1 (1 ¼ inch thick) Boneless Ribeye (about 1 lb)

Salt and coarsely ground Black Pepper

Directions:

1. Stir together the garlic, chiles, oregano and oil in a medium baking dish. Add the steaks and turn to coat in the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 8 hours.

2. Heat grill to high. Remove the steaks from the refrigerator 30 minutes before grilling to take the chill of it. Remove from the marinade and season liberally on both sides with salt and pepper. Grill the steak on both sides until golden brown and slightly charred and cooked to medium-rare (130 degrees on an instant-read thermometer) – about 9 minutes. Remove from the grill and let rest, loosely tented with foil, for 10 minutes. Slice into ¼-inch thick slices.

Anaheim Chile Vinaigrette

Ingredients:

3 Large Anaheim Chiles, grilled, peeled, seeded and diced

4 Cloves of Roasted Garlic, peeled

3 Tablespoons Red Wine Vinegar

3 Tablespoons Fresh Lime Juice

1 Tablespoon Honey, or more if needed

Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper

¾ Cup Canola Oil

¼ Cup chopped fresh Cilantro

Directions:

1. Combine the Anaheim chiles, garlic, vinegar, lime juice, a few tablespoons of water, honey, salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth.

2. With the motor running, slowly add the oil until emulsified. Add the cilantro, blend 5 seconds longer. There should be flecks of the cilantro in the vinaigrette.

Quesadilla

Ingredients:

12 Flour Tortillas, 6-inch in diameter

1 ½ Cups grated Monterey Jack Cheese

Marinated Ribeye slices, from above

6 Ounces Soft Goat Cheese, crumbled

3 Green Onions, thinly sliced

Canola Oil

Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper

1 Teaspoon Ancho Chile Powder

Cilantro Leaves, for garnish

Directions:

1. Preheat the grill to medium heat. Place 8 tortillas on a flat surface and divide the Monterey Jack, some of the beef, goat cheese and green onion among the tortillas (in that order); season with salt and pepper to taste.

2. Stack the tortillas to make four 2-layer tortillas and top each with the remaining tortillas. Brush the tops of the tortillas with canola oil and sprinkle with some of the ancho powder. Carefully place on the grill, ancho-side down and grill until lightly golden brown – about 2 minutes. Flip the quesadillas over, close the lid of the grill until the bottom of the tortillas are lightly golden brown and the cheese has melted. Remove from the grill, cut into quarters and top each quarter with some of the Anaheim vinaigrette and garnish with cilantro leaves.

An actress since the age of 12, Lott stars alongside Lucas Cruikshank in the feature film Fred: The Movie, based on the popular YouTube videos, which will premiere on Nickelodeon on September 17th. She has also been cast alongside Bette Midler, Adrien Brody, and Sharon Stone in the film Sweet Baby Jesus — a ’70s flashback comedy from writer Steve Blair and directed by Peter Hewitt.

Earlier this year, Billboard selected Lott as one of its 2010 “Faces to Watch.” She has also been featured in Teen Vogue, Interview, and Nylon, which called her “one of the U.K.’s most promising new pop stars.”

Athletes from Across Nation to Compete in Inaugural San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz

Athletes from Across Nation to Compete in Inaugural San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz

One of the world’s most difficult triathlons boasts 400 foot sand ladder and strong currents

This summer, athletes from across the U.S. and as young as 12 years old will attempt what was once thought to be impossible: a treacherous swim from the nation’s former high-security federal prison, Alcatraz, to the San Francisco mainland as they kick off the inaugural San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz.

Athletes hailing from as far away as New York, Texas, Florida, Massachusetts and Illinois will gather in San Francisco for the event, managed by Tri-California Events. Elite participants racing this year include Melanie McQuaid, three-time X-Terra Mountain Bike Champion from Canada; Ben Collins of Washington, who just won the San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island; and Brian Fleischmann, the 2008 Tri-California Elite Series Champion from Colorado.

In addition, more than 100 athletes from the triathlon’s designated beneficiary organizations, The Challenged Athletes Foundation and Team In Training will also participate.

Furthermore, with a growing number of women participating in triathlons, Tri-California Events and San Francisco sporting-goods retailer, Sports Basement, are partnering together to host a series of pre-racing events exclusive to Bay Area women. The events will include a training session and live Q&A, designed for women already participating in the triathlon or those who would like to still sign up. Together, Sports Basement and Tri-California hope to take the away the intimidation factor and train women for a memorable event.

“While swimming from Alcatraz is one of the most challenging feats an athlete can attempt, the many groups participating in the inaugural San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz speak to the sense of community a triathlon creates,” said Terry Davis, Tri-California Events, President. “Between the grueling swim, hills and sand run, our athletes will truly push themselves, demonstrating the physical and mental preparation and endurance needed to compete.”

The International Distance Triathlon is set to begin Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 7:00 a.m. PST, where athletes will jump from a boat in the San Francisco Bay, stationed just off the shores of the island of Alcatraz (1.2 miles). And, unlike the prisoners who once tried unsuccessfully to escape from Alcatraz, there will be boats and kayaks standing by for assistance.

Following the chilly, 55 degree swim made up of strong currents and under-water life, athletes will jump on their bikes to navigate the hills of San Francisco with sharp turns, fast descents and tiring climbs through the streets of the Presidio, Lincoln Park and out to the Great Highway and JFK Drive. The bike portion will last 25 miles, the longest triathlon in San Francisco.

With two-thirds of the race completed, triathletes will take in the beautiful scenery of the San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, etc. as they run west for seven miles to Baker Beach. Here, they’ll encounter the famous 400 step “AVIA Sand Ladder.” They’ll compete for new running shoes in this AVIA Sand Ladder Challenge, where they will be timed from the base to the top of the ladder.

A lifestyle festival will be held with “Breakout demonstrations” and “Ball and Chain Clinics,” and will showcase San Francisco businesses that will feature nutrition, green living, parent resources, fitness studios, gear, triathlon clubs, endurance sports and more. Get out of solitary confinement and join the festival on Saturday, August 28, 2010 between 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. PST, and Sunday until 3:00 p.m., at the Marina Green in San Francisco, Calif.

To register for the triathlon or for more information, please visit www.tricalifornia.com. Once online registration closes, on-site registration will be available.

Six apps that will assist you in healthy living

Six apps that will assist you in healthy living

When fingers get pointed in debates over the obesity epidemic in the United States, technology sometimes shoulders some of the blame. Time in front of computer screens or television is often listed as part of the reason why Americans aren't as healthy as they have been in the past. But the truth is there are also technological advances that have the potential to guide you in your quest for a healthier lifestyle, whether that is eating right, exercising or keeping tabs on vital numbers that are important to your health.

Take smart phone applications for example. Nowadays, you can find applications for just about anything in life that might capture your interest, and healthy living is no exception. So if you're looking to stay fit and healthy, here are six mobile apps that give you and your family a little extra help:

Lose It!: Counting calories is perhaps the simplest and most effective way to keep track of your health goals, especially if it involves weight loss. But it's difficult to do all the adding and subtracting in your head, which is where the free app Lose It! comes in. The app allows you to enter what you eat each day and calculates not only calories, but fat, protein, cholesterol and carbohydrates based on portion size. It also allows you to enter different types of workouts, from walking to yoga, to see how many calories you will burn while you are exercising.

Carb Counting with Lenny: This app is designed to help children with diabetes count carbohydrates to help manage their diabetes, but can be of use to anyone. Using their mascot Lenny the Lion, who also uses insulin pump therapy, Medtronic Diabetes introduced this app, which allows children with type 1 diabetes to learn about carbohydrate levels in basic foods. The application also allows users to create a customizable food guide using their own photos or ones they find on the Internet, as well as play games to test their carb-counting knowledge. Periodic contests and giveaways (www.medtronicdiabetes.com/carb-counting-contest) are announced to reward registered users who get highest game scores. Medtronic Diabetes, which makes such products as continuous glucose monitoring devices, designed the app to be useful and educational for both children with diabetes and others who are interested in monitoring carb intake.

Size Me Up: Another application for kids. This one allows children to enter their current height and receive estimates for how tall they might be in the future, at any given age. This can be used to help keep your child motivated to eat right, so they can grow up to be tall and healthy.

BP Buddy: This application allows people who are monitoring their blood pressure to input their blood pressure numbers and heart rate numbers and log them for up to 60 days. An e-mail feature allows users to send their numbers to their doctor for analysis.

The Carrot: As an interactive journal, this application allows you to track multiple items related to health. In addition to entering information on meals, workouts, and even medication, you can also enter your assessment of your moods or the level of job satisfaction you are feeling at the moment to see if you can pinpoint what healthy habits work best for you.

FitReach: This training and diet application allows you to enter information on your meals, as well as workouts. It also encourages you to do regular weigh-ins so you can compare your weight loss with your goals on graphs that are a part of the app.

Applications are available on iTunes and can also be downloaded through your iPhone, smart phone or other compatible mobile device.

The Power of Rest

The Power of Rest

New book reveals Americans are dangerously rest-deprived – and more sleep isn’t the answer

THE POWER OF REST
A 30-Day Plan to Reset your Body

Award-winning sleep, rest, and body clock expert Dr. Matthew Edlund has identified an ongoing health crisis. After years of clinical research and consultations with hundreds of patients, he discovered that many people aren’t just sleep-deprived, they’re rest-deprived. The result? Our hearts, minds, and central nervous systems are overloaded, our health is suffering, and we’ve forgotten what it feels like to be truly refreshed. Dr. Edlund’s new book THE POWER OF REST: Why Sleep Alone is Not Enough (HarperOne, Hardcover, $24.99, June 8, 2010) provides a comprehensive step-by-step solution to rebuilding our natural ability to rest.

Too many people today accept sluggishness and fatigue as the inevitable side effects of hectic lives, and believe that there isn’t much they can do about it besides squeezing in another hour or two of sleep. Getting enough sleep is important (and Dr. Edlund provides plenty of expert advice on sleeping well) but it’s only one part of a much larger spectrum of rest. The benefits of making time for rest have proven extraordinary: when people engage the body’s power to restore and renew itself, they look younger, heal faster, lose weight more effectively, and experience greater joy in their work and their relationships.

Dr. Edlund has isolated the unique benefits of four crucial types of active rest to create a groundbreaking program that fits easily into even the busiest schedules. The four types of rest include:

· Physical Rest: Sleep is one form of passive physical rest, but engaging in active forms of physical rest is also crucial. Dr. Edlund’s 30-day plan provides a range of techniques for active physical rest, including breathing exercises, timed naps, baths, and yoga poses.

· Mental Rest: While we need to rest the body, it’s equally important to learn to focus and concentrate the mind. Mental rest involves reconfiguring one’s mind to quickly and easily obtain a sense of relaxed control, and Dr. Edlund has developed exercises—including self-hypnosis, relaxation, and visualization—designed to help maximize this process.

· Social Rest: Humans are hardwired to be extremely social—social connectedness is built into the structure of our brains. Studies show that people with strong social connections live longer, cope with stress better, and are healthier. The Power of Rest explains how to incorporate key social rest techniques into your life.

· Spiritual Rest: Certain spiritual practices can provide a profound sense of rest, inner peace, connection, and self-healing, and scientific studies have demonstrated that meditation can actually change the structure of the brain over time. Dr. Edlund provides exercises involving meditation, prayer and contemplation that bring renewal and a sense of well-being.

We wouldn’t expect our bodies to function without food and, Dr. Edlund argues, we shouldn’t expect to feel fully fueled and alert without rest. This step-by-step 30-day plan introduces one simple, no-cost technique each day—many of which can be accomplished in just a minute or two. Readers will learn to make room in their lives for this basic biological need, and how to quickly create a healthier, more successful, more vital and relaxed life.

Why You Want Your Kids to Play Outside

Why You Want Your Kids to Play Outside

Thumbs. They race across joysticks and pale glass surfaces, clicking and pulling so quickly you need a stop time camera to appreciate what they’ve done. They kick footballs, pilot spacecraft across millions of light years and explode the sharp teethed jaws of flesh eating aliens who would destroy Earth and every living thing on it.

And that’s the only part of the kid that’s moving.

Adults of all kinds, grandparents, aunts, cousins, mother-in-laws, teachers, come to me with the same complaint – the kids are inside all day. Why are they sitting in chairs glued down like a mollusk rather than playing in the sun? These same adults angrily tell me “the kids’ parents should get up off their duff” and go outside to watch them, but they’re “too damn lazy to move.”

I tell them the economic crisis makes this vastly more complicated, but kids and how they play is a public health issue that will affect their health and learning all their lives. This is the debate I hear about letting kids play outside:

Reasons Against:

1.  Predators. They’re out there, parents tell me. They’re right. Predators are out there, in schools and supermarkets, churches and playgrounds, and kids have to be taught to deal with them anywhere and anytime.

2.  Bullies. Like predators, kids must deal with them so they can develop independent, self-reliant personalities – in other words grow up. But what do kids do inside? Two thirds of children’s TV programming contains violence, and the more violence kids watch, the more violent acts they commit as adults.

3.  The kids will get hurt. True, they can get injured outside, but it’s a lot better for them to actively use their bodies so they can grow strong muscles and bones. Sitting all day promotes atherosclerosis.

4.  West Nile virus. Yes, there are innumerable bugs outside, but there are enough bugs on your hand to kill all humanity if immune systems don’t work - and playing outside can help mature immune a kid’s immune system in ways that will help her and the rest of the society for decades (see below).

5.  Our community is not built for for kids’ play. And the tenements of your grandparents were? Gated communities may sometimes be a bad idea, but kids can figure out how to play anywhere.

Reasons to Play Outside

1.  Learning to play – a great joy of life is the creativity of play, of making up games, stories, roles, of creating with others - and imaginations open up when you get outside. Play can also teach sustained attention, required for sustained achievement.

2.  Sunlight – light is a drug that resets immunity and biological clocks, improves mood, and provides vitamin D; yes, it can cause skin cancer, but that’s what hats, sunscreen and long sleeves and pants are for.

3.  Improving immunity – Playing in the dirt teaches the immune system, and farms kids get much less asthma. Handling bugs in childhood is critical to preventing many auto-immune diseases. Your body learns by doing and through experience, just as it does for intellectual activities.

4.  Preventing obesity – humans are built to move. We’re walking machines. Hunter gatherer societies walk 12-14 miles a day. Walking can help prevent many disease scourges, and walking after meals is probably a great strategy to control weight.

5.  Getting into nature – Even short periods in the natural world improve mood, and nature has historically provided our ideals of paradise. If we want to preserve our planet rather than cook it, kids need to get outside and watch how things live and grow.

6.  Making friends - you can play video games together, but it’s far better to play with others, learning to cooperate and care about them – a large part of what it means to be human.

7.  Different senses – you smell, hear, and taste inside, but you’ll sense so much more outside, teaching your nervous system while expanding your imagination.

8.  Sports – you might make a living as a virtual gamer in Korea, but most of us won’t learn baseball, football, soccer, tennis, and other sports unless we get outside. We need to use our bodies the way they’re built, to move, jump, and play.

There are dozens of other reasons for the kids to play outside, and perhaps you’ll write in some. We humans are social animals; designed to move; built to live and love nature; to grow and mature by doing. So let the kids play outside, let their brains and bodies grow, and let them experience some of the greatest joys of life – together with other kids.

Back-to-School Organizing

Back-to-School Organizing

It's that time of year... the date on the calendar has been circled since June - time for the kiddos to go back to their usual routines.  Sending the kids back to school means you'll, once again, have time to get the things done that you've been putting off since the last school bell rang in June.  But having all that free time can leave you wondering exactly what to do first... and when can you fit it in?  The easiest way to stay on top of things is to get organized with planners and more...

A good planner can become invaluable to keeping your life running smoothly - Doctors appointments, Parent-Teacher conferences, Meetings and more - they can all become overwhelming if you don't keep track of everything.  Simply jotting your planned activities into your planner can help you know what's coming up and make sure that you don't over schedule or (even worse) miss an appointment.  I use my planner to keep my calendar, schedule my to-do list for the day, store important phone numbers and addresses, keep notes on topics I'd like to write about - I even use it to jot down my grocery list!

My favorite motto is "Simple Habits Keep Your Home Running Smoothly" and the habit of using your planner is definitely the basis for keeping it all together.  Want to find a great planner for yourself?  There are some really great coupons for Franklin Covey organizers -  some of the best and most functional planners to be found anywhere around - go check them out and begin getting your life organized today!

How to get a custom closet on a do-it-yourself budget

How to get a custom closet on a do-it-yourself budget

Both fashion and budget-conscious Americans alike are taking better care of their clothing and other possessions, starting with how they store them. But if you haven't been reading today's most popular home and style magazines, sneaking a peak inside your neighbor's closets, or house-hunting lately, you might not have noticed: Closets have evolved from clumsy and non-functional to downright fabulous.

Or maybe you've envied the spacious, custom closets characteristic of luxury homes, but haven't had thousands of dollars to plunk down on a professional closet makeover.

In either case, you probably need a closet solution. That's why manufacturers of closet organization systems have been busy developing new, do-it-yourself home storage solutions ranging from low-end, rack-and-wire plug-ins to handsome furniture-style systems in white or wood-toned melamine and even solid wood.

Among the strongest and most flexible of the new systems are Home Options Storage Solutions, available around the corner at Lowe's home improvement stores or at www.lowes.com. Shelving and pole heights are adjustable so your design can be adapted periodically to your changing needs. Full extension drawers with attractive fronts provide complete access.

Where to start creating a custom closet on a do-it-yourself budget? First, determine your skill level. Do you need a professional? Probably not. Many closet systems can be installed in a weekend by anyone of average skill level. Brands such as Home Options offer websites with pre-existing templates and online design tools that make closet planning easy.

Next, measure your space. Determine the width, height and depth and write them down. Is your closet a reach-in, walk-in, or are you creating it from freestanding space? Have high ceilings? Add a shelf to store items overhead.

When planning, consider designating 50 percent of your closet space for low-hanging clothes, 25 percent for longer clothes, and 25 percent for drawers and shelves. Then, take inventory of your stuff and make adjustments to meet your personal needs.

Use a tower unit to separate his space from hers and incorporate shelves and drawers. Use pant racks to organize 12 pairs of pants in a compact space while keeping them smooth and pressed. Use shelves for organizing folded sweaters so they keep their proper form. Raise shoes off the floor. Look for shoe cubbies that comfortably hold two shoes, not just one. Shoe cubbies are also ideal for stowing away evening bags, belts and other personal items. For more information, visit www.homeoptionsstorage.com.

Pears - Tips, Tricks and a Recipe

Pears - Tips, Tricks and a Recipe

Did you know that pears are a member of the rose family? Yes! They sure are. There are over 3000 varieties of pears in the world. If you plant a pear tree today it will take about 7 years to produce fruit, but they can live for 100 years.

Pears are packed with fiber and a good amount of vitamin C. One pear gives you 6 grams of fiber in a sweet, juicy, crunchy package for only 100 calories for a medium sized fruit.

Here's a TIP:

Buy your pears unripe and ripen them up at home. These babies are one fruit that does better coming home to ripen rather than on the tree--birds get them, they get squishy quickly after ripening, so don't feel bad taking home unripened fruit.

Here's a TRICK:

All pears can be eaten raw as they are, or diced and put into fruit salad. Pears are also great for cooking with meats, used in a stuffing, jams, chutneys, and can even be roasted, grilled or braised.

And your RECIPE:

Pear Strawberry Salsa with Feta Cheese
Serves 6 to 8

2 ripe pears, diced into 1/4-inch cubes

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 cup fresh strawberries, coarsely chopped

1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped

2 tablespoons jalapeno, finely chopped

1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled

1 baguette French bread cut in 1/4-inch thick slices, brushed with olive oil and toasted

In a large bowl, mix the first 7 ingredients. Now add the feta on top and serve with the toasted French bread. Enjoy!

Pour dressing over the top of the salad and toss well. Serve immediately with freshly ground pepper over the top.
