Beating the Back-To-School Bugs
The first few weeks of school are a crucial time to get oriented to new classes and a new environment, and missing important rules and instructions can have an impact that reverberates throughout the year. This makes it important for parents to do what they can to keep their kids healthy in preparation for that inevitable germy classroom.
However, our cultural compulsion for cleanlinessconstant application of hand-sterilizing gels and liberal prescription of antibioticsmay be depleting our childrens bodies of good bacteria which may keep them from building a strong immune system.
Recent articles in Scientific American and Pediatrics have approached this issue; they noted that children who grow up in households with pets are ill less frequently than those who do not, and the recent sevenfold increase in autoimmune diseases may be partly because of the disappearance of certain bacteria.
But even in an antiseptic world there are ways to restore good bacteria and promote a healthy immune system. 70% of the human immune system is located in the gut, and maintaining a healthy population and balance of good bacteria is an important part of overall health. Probiotics such as Culturelle®, can help play a vital role in promoting kids immunity and overall wellness.*
