Family Fun at Home

Last week I focused on fun family outings and this week I want to share some fun ideas for family fun that you can do right at home.

Indoor:
Family Game Night- Pull out those dusty board games and have fun playing some family favorites. Mix things up by creating some family rules (like if you roll doubles you have to do 10 jumping jacks)
Family Movie Night- Make your kids the stars of family movie night. Pull out your video camera and watch your family videos. The kids will love to see themselves on screen. Make it a true movie night and add some movie time snacks.
Dance Party- Dust of those CDs and turn up the volume. Show your kids how you used to dance when you were a kid (I am sure they would love to see my try to do the Roger Rabbit or the Running Man). This is a great way to get a bit of exercise and have fun together at the same time.
Pizza Party- Let each child make their own individual pizza. You can buy refrigerated pizza dough and let each child roll out their own individual piece, or you can use sliced sourdough bread as your crust. A bottle of Marinara sauce makes an easy pizza sauce or you can use this simple recipe for an easy pizza sauce (this recipe comes from my grandma, it is the sauce we would use for making homemade pizzas as a family when I was a little girl):
1 can tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste
1 Tbsp minced onion
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp Oregano leaves
1 Tbsp parsley
1 tsp crushed red peppers (optional)
Mix all ingredients and spread on pizza crusts
Set out bowls of cheese and toppings and let your children be creative! Top it off with a bottle of pop and you have dinner and fun all rolled up in one.
Outdoor:
Fly a Kite: If you live on a quiet street or have a larger yard, a kite is a fun activity on a breezy day! Basic kites are available at many grocery stores at a very reasonable price and can provide hours of entertainment.
Family Olympics: Have your own Olympic Games. One year my husband mowed a lap around our back yard and we had running races before he finished the rest of the mowing. Other Olympic style activities could include: Somersaults, Broad Jump, Obstacle Courses etc. Have fun homemade awards and a healthy treat for each of your Olympians when they are done.
Wash the Car- Something as simple as a bucket of soapy water and some large sponges can be so much fun. I have fond memories of washing the car with my dad as a child. The great part about this activity is it will save you money too!
Having fun together as a family strengthens family relationships. Finding ways to have fun doesn’t have to be expensive. If you have any fun family activities that your family loves, we would love for you to share with us by leaving a comment.
